His interests are varied, from sentencing theory, juvenile crime and justice, recidivism, drug policies, to the role of criminal justice in transitional legal systems - topics on which he has published several works.

Hans-Jörg Albrecht was interviewed by Anna-Maria Getoš during the 2024 ESC conference in Bucharest. In this interview, Albrecht talks about the origin of his interest in Criminology, and its relation to the role of criminal law in social control. After reviewing the development of Criminology in Germany and its institutional allocation, attention is paid to his key role as Director of the Max Planck Institute as mentor of many criminologists from different European countries and the resulting internationalisation of Criminology. The interview concludes with a review of his current research and his publications to come.
