Communications Intern: Research on Crimes that Affect the Environment, UNODC

Duties and Responsibilities

The internship is located in the Research and Trend Analysis Branch (RAB), Division for Policy Analysis and Public Affairs (DPA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), Vienna, Austria. The position is for a period of 6 months starting in February 2025. The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. For more information on the work of UNODC, please visit the following website: www. unodc.org The first-ever Global Analysis on Crimes that Affect the Environment will be published in 2025, and the third World Wildlife Crime Report was published in 2024. The intern will develop and create audio, digital, and video materials to support the launch and dissemination of the findings of these and other studies related to crimes that affect the environment in line with UNODC branding. The Research and Trend Analysis Branch’s (RAB) mandate is to conduct research and report on drugs and crime. This mandate has been expanded to include crimes that affect the environment, such as illegal wildlife trade, illegal logging, illegal mining and trafficking of metals and minerals, waste crime and trafficking, illegal pollution, and crimes in the fisheries sector. As such, RAB has and will be publishing numerous studies on these topics. The findings and policy implications of these studies support the improvement and development of prevention, deterrence, and detection strategies as well as influencing policies and legislation related to the environment and crime. In order to ensure extensive and accessible dissemination of the research findings, RAB is developing and creating a bank of materials that can be used on social media, in presentations by UNODC staff in field offices around the world, and any other relevant fora. The intern will support the team in the development and creation of these audio, digital, and video materials. Tasks will include: - reviewing existing communications materials from RAB and wider UNODC working on crimes that affect the environment (Global Programme on Crimes that Affect the Environment) - creating slides, Power Points, and/or other digital materials of research findings consistent with and using UNODC branding - designing, recording, and editing short videos of research findings - researching and proposing other dissemination materials - working closely with RAB‘s Communication Officer and the UNODC Advocacy section to ensure consistency and complementarity

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have recently completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent). • Be computer literate in standard software applications; • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required (i.e., communications, journalism, media studies, film). • Applicants must be a student in the final year of the first university degree (bachelor or equivalent), Master’s or Ph.D. Programme or equivalent, or have completed a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PH.D.
