The German Police University (DHPol) is currently seeking to fill a university professorship position (W2) by April 1st, 2025 to lead the titled subject field: "Criminology and Interdisciplinary Crime Prevention”.

DHPol is a higher education institution that specializes in police and administrative science and is jointly governed by the federal and state governments of Germany. It offers an interdisciplinary, professional and internationally oriented masters level programs to future senior police officers. Moreover, DHPol is also responsible for the continuing education of the current senior police officers. Apart from its educational duties for the German police, the university actively engages in national and international research in the police sciences as well as international cooperation with other universities and police educational institutions.

The appointed applicant will represent the entire field of criminology as an empirical social science discipline with a particular focus on interdisciplinary crime prevention in accordance with the profile of the department. The DHPol is seeking applications from highly-qualified social scientists with a specialization in criminology. Potential candidates are expected to analyze dynamic changes in criminality (in cooperation with police authorities and other law enforcement agencies) by using appropriate explanatory and interpretive theories as well as concepts in order to develop research-based measures to address crime-based issues. Consequently, the adoption of an internationally comparative approach should be pursued.

Applicants are expected to have internationally visible publications, have empirical research experience, a very good knowledge of qualitative and quantitative methods and experience in the management of projects as well as in the acquisition of grants. They are also expected to be willing to take an innovative teaching approach and to collaborate with relevant police bodies involved in criminological and crime prevention research. Teaching assignments are based on the current and future DHPol degree programs, as exemplified by the curricula of the current master’s degree programs in "Public Administration - Police Management" and "Public Governance and Democratic Resilience". The teaching languages are German and English. The incumbent is expected to participate in the development of study programs as well as the conceptual design and implementation of further training events for the federal and state senior police services in an interdisciplinary manner. The supervision of doctoral students and the mentoring of young scholars are also among the core tasks. The research and teaching orientation should correspond to the professional, practice-oriented and interdisciplinary profile of the university.

The prerequisites for the applicants are a pedagogical aptitude, a qualified doctorate in a social science discipline and a habilitation or equivalent academic achievements in criminology or crime prevention (see § 19 DHPolG). Depending upon the applicant’s citizenship, the first appointment to a professorship will be made either as a probationary civil servant or in a comparable employment relationship.
